OREANDA-NEWS. September 02, 2016. If you’ve ever used Skype at home or in your office, you’ve participated in the exploding global Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) market, which Persistence Market Research predicts will more than double from \\$94.1 billion to \\$194.5 billion over the next eight years. VoIP transfers voice and messaging traffic over the Internet. For most consumers, it is a free and easy way to communicate without picking up a phone.

However, to ensure a smooth, “jitter-free” calling experience, VoIP service providers are solving some of the most difficult communications problems many companies face. Voice applications are extremely latency sensitive, which means that any delays in the network sending voice packets between the callers can cause that annoying “you’re breaking up” effect, or worse, a dropped call.

So when global VoIP service provider and Equinix partner, Telnyx, sees an improvement of more than 60% in network performance with a 16% reduction in average transmission latency and a 62% decrease in average network jitter, well … that is something to call home about.

How Telnyx Did It

Telnyx built out its global IP network backbone for its cloud-based on-demand voice/messaging platform, Telephony Engine (TE), by looking for globally strategic points of presence (PoP) and network peering and carrier- and cloud-neutral data centers. In a recent ChannelVision article, Telnyx Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Ian Reither and Jason Craft, Telnyx senior network engineer, wrote that those requirements are “essential for gaining the best possible performance and routing visibility.”

The VoIP market is not only latency-sensitive, but it’s also price-sensitive. And according to Reither and Craft, a more cost-effective alternative to building new facilities with racks of servers and network gear is to “use cloud service providers as the new data center.” That way, VoIP providers can leverage direct, proximate connections to multiple cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), IBM SoftLayer and Microsoft Azure, and cost effectively spin up compute and storage services as needed.

Telnyx built its TE network backbone in Equinix’s Chicago, Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. data centers, with plans to expand to Hong Kong and London. It’s leveraging an Interconnection Oriented Architecture™ (IOA™) that enables them to get the following “essentials” needed to deliver a higher quality of service to its enterprise customers:

  • Global Reach – Telnyx can quickly scale its TE platform around the world.
  • High-Performance PoPs – By leveraging the Equinix Performance Hub, Telnyx can accelerate its global network presence, while reducing its average network latency and jitter rates.
  • Multi-Cloud Interconnection ̶ Equinix Cloud Exchange enables Telnyx to bypass the Internet and get direct and secure access to AWS, SoftLayer and Azure clouds via high-speed, low-latency virtualized connections for faster provisioning, easier management and greater security.
  • Competitive Pricing   ̶  A high density of multiple carriers within Equinix’s rich network ecosystem, allows Telnyx to pick and choose the best priced network peering services.

Telnyx’s PoP Metro View

Telnyx leverages an IOA to solve one of the industry’s hardest communications problems and to deliver high-performance VoIP services to its enterprise customers worldwide. This same interconnection-first strategy can work for any enterprise or service provider facing connectivity obstacles – in particular, interconnecting people, locations, clouds and data.
