OREANDA-NEWS  Cars of the Japanese concern Toyota became the best-selling cars in the world in 2020 and overtook in popularity their main competitor, the German company Volkswagen. This information follows from the report of Toyota Motor. The last time a Japanese concern topped the world ranking in car sales in 2015.

Toyota, as well as group manufacturers Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, sold 9.53 millioncars in 2020. This is down 11.3 percent from 2019, according to the manufacturer. This is the first decline in the world sales for the group in five years and the first decline specifically for Toyota in 10 years.

Volkswagen sold about 9.3 million vehicles last year. This is 15.2 percent less than a year earlier.

By the end of 2020, the Japanese brand reached a record production level in the entire history of the company, despite the negative impact of the coronavirus and the suspension of factories. Production was boosted mainly by increased demand in China, whose economy is recovering faster than others from the pandemic.
