OREANDA-NEWS. The German charity organization Welthungerhilfe (can be translated as «Help for the Hungry in the World») considers It necessary to reform the global food system. This was announced on Wednesday, June 30, in Berlin by the head of Welthungerhilfe, Marlehn Thieme.

«We need conditions that will allow ten billion people to eat healthy food in the near future without destroying nature and the climate», she said. According to Thieme, the current system is neither fair nor balanced, and in the long term it damages «our planet».

The UN Food Systems Summit in September should create the prerequisites for the development of alternative mechanisms, said Thieme. The German government should play an active role in the process of this transition, the head of the Welthungerhilfe believes. Germany needs to link agricultural subsidies with environmental and climate requirements. In addition, according to Tim, it is necessary to reduce the consumption of meat, since it requires too much land for growing animal feed, which is then not enough for the production of other food products.

Speaking about the upcoming summit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in particular, noted: «It is unacceptable that hunger increases when more than billion tons of food are thrown into landfills every year in the world».

«It is time to change production and consumption patterns, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions», he added. As explained in the UN, the concept of «food system» means a set of activities related to the production, processing, transportation and consumption of food.
