OREANDA-NEWS. The upgrade will see signalling on the line between Ferriby, Gilberdyke and Saltmarshe modernised, with old signalling technology ‘recontrolled’ from local lineside signal boxes to the state-of-the-art Rail Operating Centre in York. The project will provide a whole host of benefits for passengers, including a more modern railway with increased reliability which has greater flexibility for any future timetable or line speed changes.

Network Rail is investigating the longer term possibility of closing both Gilberdyke and Bellasize level crossings to improve safety for the community.  This would require a new road, for which a Transport and Works Act Order would be needed. This cannot be achieved in the timescales of the signalling upgrade so some shorter term improvements are planned to the way the level crossings work.

Network Rail will improve safety at the crossings by installing miniature stop lights, which will provide a permanent, improved visual and audible warning for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists using the crossings.

From 3 April 2018 until Autumn when control of the level crossings moves from Gilberdyke Signal Box to York, a Network Rail gate-keeper will also be on site to help vehicles to cross safely.

For those wishing to find out more about the signalling upgrade and the effect this has on the crossings, Network Rail is holding two public information events for residents to ask any questions which they may have, on:

  • Saturday, 3 March 10:00 – 12:00 at Gilberdyke War Memorial Hall, Clementhorpe Road, Gilberdyke, HU15 2UG
  • Saturday, 3 March 14:00 – 16:00 at Elloughton Village Hall, Elloughton Road, Brough, HU15 1AJ.
