OREANDA-NEWS. European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, made a strong plea for fair competition in Europe’s taxi sector today at IRU’s Taxi debate on the impact of technological disruption on mobility. She also insisted that social measures for employees in the taxi sector be maintained and that proper taxes are paid by all operators. At the debate, co-hosted by Michael Cramer MEP, Chair of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, the Commissioner took the opportunity to lay out a clear vision for Europe’s sector that embraces new technologies, responds to customers’ requirements and sees businesses providing the same services abiding by the same rules.

Commissioner Bulc said, "I plead for fair competition between traditional and new operators. We should not favour one business model over another and avoid substituting local monopolies by global ones."

Commissioner Bulc concluded by underlining the clear difference between a non-profit sharing economy and a profit-making collaborative economy. She also further urged operators and drivers to be as close to customers’ needs as possible as the best way of ensuring success.
