OREANDA-NEWS. The City Hall of Barcelona is considering the idea of canceling flights between the Catalan capital and Madrid. This initiative of the city authorities aims to combat the climate crisis.

The administration of Barcelona argues its position by the presence of rail links between the two most populated cities of the country. This mode of transport doesn't emit carbon dioxide and is much safer for the environment, said the climatic emergency adviser to the city hall of Eloy Badia in an interview with Betevé.

Traveling by plane from Madrid to Barcelona takes just over an hour, and the train ride lasts about three hours. However, from April this year, the Spanish railway operator Renfe will launch low-cost high-speed trains between the two cities. The authorities of Barcelona expect that they will soon be able to submit their initiative to the governments of the country and the region. "We must all help reduce harmful emissions", Badia said.
