OREANDA-NEWS. Science Alert portal reports that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, USA) is preparing to deliver a kinetic impact on an asteroid 65803 Didymos flying towards the Earth.

It is specified that an astronomical body does not threaten the planet in any way, but the blow with which experts will change the trajectory of its flight will become a training for the system of protecting the Earth from other asteroids.

The mission to intercept an asteroid was called DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test). Due to the spread of the coronavirus infection, NASA has already canceled several launches, but DART’s start is scheduled for July 22, 2021; it should reach the target in September 22.
