The corresponding agreement was reached during the state visit of President Xi Jinping to Nepal, where he met with his local counterpart Bidhya Devi Bhandari. "Recognizing that Mount Sagarmatha/Jomolungma is an eternal symbol of friendship between Nepal and China, both sides will jointly declare the height of the mountain and conduct scientific research", the joint statement said.
