OREANDA-NEWS What are the chances that the militants of the Azov regiment will receive capital punishment in a conversation with NEWS.ru, a lawyer from the Donetsk People's Republic, a specialist in criminal law Nikolai Kalashnikov said. The expert also said that over the 8 years of the existence of the execution article, only one person was convicted under it.

It is unlikely that the death penalty will be applied to the Azov people, since if they have the status of prisoners of war, then there can be no question of any capital punishment, but if they have the status of those accused of committing numerous murders of civilians of the DPR on over the past 8 years, then, although theoretically, it is possible, - said Kalashnikov.

The lawyer also recalled that Russia had made certain statements on the topic of guarantees for the preservation of life, nationalists who voluntarily surrendered.

I want to cancel that, given the statements of the Russian Federation, about saving the lives of militants, subject to surrender, I think that they will still not be executed. In the DPR, in general, for all 8 years of the existence of this article, the Supreme Court of the DPR made only one such decision against a person who committed a serial murder, and then, according to rumors, the sentence was never carried out for reasons of humanism, Kalashnikov concluded.

Earlier, Senator of the Federation Council Andrei Klishas said that the fighters of the Azov National Battalion should be executed in the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. This will allow not to violate the Constitution of the Russian Federation, according to which the death penalty is prohibited in the country.

Also, the head of the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, noted that the fate of the surrendered Ukrainian fighters from Azovstal would be decided by the court.
