OREANDA-NEWS. The number of victims of floods in western Germany has risen to 11 people, 70 are missing, according to the Bild edition.

Earlier, the media reported seven dead and 50-60 missing.

Heavy rains continue in Germany from Monday due to cyclone Bernd. The main blow of the disaster fell on the western and southwestern regions of the country, where rivers, including the Rhine, overflow their banks, and streets are flooded.

The district of Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate suffered the worst damage, where at least four people died, and six houses collapsed near the town of Adenau in the commune of Schuld.

Firefighters working in the flooded areas of the Sauerland mountain region were victims of the bad weather. One of them died in Altena when he was pulling a victim out of the water - a 46-year-old rescuer managed to lift a man into the car, but he himself was carried away by the current. About two hours later, his 52-year-old colleague died in the same Sauerland.  Also in the region, five more people died.

In the vicinity of the city of Adenau, overflowing the banks of the river destroyed six houses, another 25 are under threat of collapse. Currently, no connection can be established with 30 local residents. Many people are forced to hide from the rising water on the roofs of houses, many of them cannot be reached by boats, so the rescuers are waiting for the arrival of helicopters.
