OREANDA-NEWSThe threat of cancellation or postponement of the upcoming November 3 general election in the United States in connection with the spread of the new coronavirus is completely absent. This opinion was expressed on Monday in a conversation with a Russian media correspondent, professor of political science at the University of New Mexico, Lonna Atkeson.

According to her, the transfer of "primaries or elections to local authorities is another matter". "This is possible because it's about elections in the states. But, when it comes to federal elections, there is no way to carry out this postponement or cancellation", Atkeson said. The US presidential election during the Civil War took place in 1864.

The specialist admitted that, in theory, general elections in the United States can be moved to a later date. However, in reality, such a scenario is practically impracticable, since for this it would be necessary to change the federal legislation governing the conduct of elections.
