OREANDA-NEWS. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the border with Rwanda, militants attacked a convoy of the UN World Food Program. One person was killed. According to «Actualite», the victim of the attack was the driver of one of the cars.

The Italian ambassador, Luca Atanasio, was also wounded, which, presumably, could be the target of the attack. He managed to leave the scene with the help of the military and was taken to the hospital of the UN stabilization mission in Congo. However, later he died.

Several other people were injured, some are in serious condition. In addition, it is reported, that two citizens were abducted. According to the source, the attackers took British tourists hostage.

Earlier it was reported, that an outbreak of plague was registered in the Congo – there are more than 500 cases of infection in the country. «AFP» reported, citing the head of the health department of Ituri province, Patrick Karamura, that 31 people died.
According to the official, there are cases of bubonic plague, as well as pulmonary and septic.
