OREANDA-NEWS. The meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of the EU countries, which is expected to launch the technical procedure for drawing up a new sanctions list against Russia because of Alexei Navalny, began at 9.30 am local time (11.30 Moscow time) in Brussels. The names of the persons involved in the sanctions list will be released later this week after the list is published in the official journal.

The item on the launch of sanctions through a written procedure is on the agenda of the meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of the EU (COREPER) among those that do not require preliminary discussion, therefore, it should be approved automatically. The Permanent Representatives will initiate a technical writing procedure during which the EU Council will finally approve the list and it will then be published in the Official Journal.

Sanctions against Russia were practically the only topic of the COREPER meeting on March 1, although usually there are many more topics for such meetings. In addition to anti-Russian sanctions, the agenda of the meeting includes only the discussion of the program Future of Europe.

Later this week, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday, the sanctions list will be published in the official EU journal and will enter into force, at the same time its persons will become known. As a rule, sanctions take effect on the day of publication in the journal.

As previously reported by the media, the chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the director of the Russian Guard, the Prosecutor General of Russia and the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation may fall under the new sanctions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that if Brussels introduces new sanctions against Russia, they will receive a commensurate response.
