OREANDA-NEWS. The World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations humanitarian organization that provides food for the hungry around the world, was named by the Norwegian Nobel Committee the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

According to the Committee’s decision, the WFP received an award “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

“With this year’s award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to turn the eyes of the world towards the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger,” the statement reads. The Committee emphasized that the threat of hunger in a number of regions has increased amid the wide spread of the coronavirus infection of a new type throughout the world in 2020.
