Before traveling to Russia, Mike Pompeo decided to hold a series of consultations in Brussels. The head of the State Department, Mike Pompeo, as part of his working trip to Russia, canceled a visit to Moscow earlier scheduled for Monday. It is reported by Reuters, with reference to the representative of the US State Department.

Meetings of the State Secretary with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, scheduled for Tuesday in Sochi, will take place, added to the State Department. It clarifies that on Monday Pompeo will hold talks in Brussels on Iran and other topics before going to Sochi. 

The visit of the Head of the State Department to Russia was scheduled for May 13–14. As reported by the US State Department, on May 13, Pompeo was to arrive in Moscow, where he planned to meet with representatives of American business circles and students. It was also planned to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On Tuesday, May 14, according to Washington’s plans, Pompeo should meet with Putin and Lavrov to discuss “the whole range of bilateral and multilateral issues.”

It was expected that in Moscow Pompeo would meet with the staff of the US Embassy and the leadership of American companies operating in Russia, and then lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin. The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified that it was planned to exchange views on current issues in bilateral relations and current international problems, including the situation in Venezuela, Syria and Ukraine. This will be the first visit of Pompeo to Russia as the US Secretary of State.
