OREANDA-NEWS Head of the Federation Council Commission on Protection of State Sovereignty Andrei Klimov said that extremely tough measures, including economic ones, should be introduced against Latvia, reports RIA "Novosti".

According to the senator, he will not announce all of the possible measures that the government has, but these measures could be, in particular, administrative and economic.

He is sure that such measures should now be directed against Latvia.

Earlier, the Latvian Sejm had authorized the demolition of the Liberators Monument in Riga. At a meeting on May 12, the parliament supported the adoption of amendments to the law in two readings, which remove "legal obstacles" to the demolition of the Soviet monument. It is specified that amendments to the law "About agreements between the Latvian Republic and the Russian Federation signed in Moscow on April 30th, 1994" were declared urgent.

In response, the first deputy head of the international committee of the Council of the Federation, Vladimir Jabarov, said that Russia is ready to take the monument from Latvia if the authorities of the country allow the dismantling of the memorial.
