OREANDA-NEWS Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh has said that NATO expansion, the West's disregard for Russia's proposals on security guarantees and the agreements made decades ago have led to the current events in Ukraine, according to a Gazeta.ru article.

According to the diplomat, Tehran can help resolve the conflict between Kiev and Moscow as much as both sides are ready.

He added that both Ukraine and Russia are seriously considering mediation by Iran. The representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that this was announced during the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, as well as during his talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitriy Kuleba.

Earlier, China called the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO a "trap for the United States.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he had decided to conduct a military special operation in Ukraine in response to a request for help from the heads of the LNR and DNR.

The decision to conduct the operation became the reason for new sanctions against Russia by the United States and its allies.
