OREANDA-NEWS The US House of Representatives on Thursday voted in favor of a bill that recognizes America's capital, Washington, which belongs to the District of Columbia, as the 51st state. This information is reported by the CBS News TV channel.

The TV channel notes that although the lower house of the American Congress adopted the relevant document, it is unlikely to receive approval in the Senate. Last year, the House of Representatives also voted in favor of such a document, but the Senate, which was controlled by a Republican majority at the time, did not pass it. This time, the Senate is dominated by Democrats, but they still will not have enough votes to make a positive decision on this issue.

Should the District of Columbia become a state, that would give it two senators and one voting representative in the lower house of Congress.
