Babariko tried to take part in the presidential elections in Belarus in 2020 and was considered Lukashenko's main rival. But a few weeks before the vote, he was detained in the case of allegedly organizing a criminal group on the basis of Belgazprombank and withdrawing money abroad.

Other defendants in his case concluded pre-trial agreements, Babariko did not plead guilty.

Earlier it was reported that the prosecutor's office requested 15 years in prison for Babariko, accusing him of obtaining illegal income and the presence of undeclared property in offshores, as well as giving and receiving bribes.
