OREANDA-NEWS. US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan arrived at a meeting of the Moscow City Court on the case of American student Trevor Reed, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison for assaulting police officers, RIA Novosti reports.

This is Sullivan's first public event since his return to Moscow last week after spending just over two months in Washington for consultations. The leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, agreed to return the ambassadors to the capitals at the summit in Geneva.

Earlier in the Moscow City Court, RIA Novosti was informed that on Monday the court will hold an appeal hearing on Reed's case.

Reed was discharged from the hospital on June 8, where he was hospitalized with coronavirus in May. The meeting on appeal has been postponed several times, since the American has already twice been assigned psychological and psychiatric examinations.

According to the investigators, a US citizen Reed, who was visiting Moscow, had a fight on the street with two women in August 2019, and a police patrol arrived at the scene. The young man did not calm down, and they decided to take him to the department - on the way he hit one policeman and attacked another, who was driving. Because of the brawl, the police car almost got into an accident, the prosecution notes.

According to the materials of the case, during the arrest, 0.69 ppm of alcohol was found in the air exhaled by the American, and 3.033 ppm in the blood. This corresponds to heavy drunkenness. Before the verdict was announced, answering journalists' questions, he promised never to drink vodka again.

Reed's family considered the evidence in the case "fabricated or exaggerated."
