OREANDA-NEWSThe United States began to withdraw its military units from Iraq. This was announced on Monday by an Iraqi television channel with reference to a member of the Iraqi parliament’s defense and security committee, Ali al-Ghanimi. According to incoming data, US forces began the withdrawal of their troops from 15 military bases located in Iraq.

According to al-Ghanimi, the United States wants to gain a foothold in these two bases, however, "the country's parliament and the Iraqi people insist that American troops be withdrawn from all bases". There have been no official comments by the American side regarding the withdrawal of US forces from 15 military facilities in Iraq.

On January 5, two days after a US missile strike in the Baghdad airport area, which killed the commander of the Al-Quds special forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) Kassem Suleimani, the Iraqi parliament passed a resolution demanding a complete withdrawal from countries of all foreign troops.

The United States still refuses to comply with the decision of the Iraqi parliament. Trump threatened Iraq with “unprecedented sanctions” in response to Baghdad’s possible moves to withdraw United States forces from the republic.
