OREANDA-NEWS The Belgian government received "unforeseen" income due to taxes on a percentage of frozen Russian assets, the local newspaper Soir reported, citing the treasury.

"During the last budget control, the government unexpectedly presented a significant windfall: 625 million euros received as a result of taxation of interest received from Russian financial assets frozen in our country," the publication says.

As explained by the media, the Euroclear international depository operates on the territory of Belgium. According to the publication, payments on coupons and bonds due to maturity increase the amount of funds in this financial institution. At the same time, Euroclear does not just store them, but invests them. Thus, only last year the company made a profit from interest of 821 million euros. It is specified that these funds will continue to grow this year, but more slowly. The authors of the material stressed that these windfalls are taxed.
