OREANDA-NEWS  The opposition in France has criticized President Emmanuel Macron's comments about the possible use of French nuclear weapons to defend the European Union. Matilda Pano, the head of the "Disobedient France" parliamentary faction, called the comments of the French leader "crazy and a completely irresponsible move" on RTL radio.

She believes that such comments increase the risk of nuclear conflict in Europe and contradict the French nuclear doctrine, which states that they do not rely on a nuclear shield. She emphasized that they will not start a nuclear war on behalf of another country. In addition, Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament from Marine Le Pen's party, called Macron a "threat to the nation". Le Pen herself has accused the French President of lying. She was outraged by Macron's desire to share nuclear deterrence with the European Union. In conversations about this, he denied such a possibility.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron called for discussion of Europe's defense. He recalled that France's doctrine allows the use of nuclear weapons when its "vital interests" are threatened. According to him, Paris will preserve the specifics of its doctrine while expressing readiness to contribute to European defense. At the same time, Macron expressed his opinion that the European Union's defense strategy, which includes French nuclear weapons as a key element, will allow for building relations with Russia.
