OREANDA-NEWS. Honeywell’s newest turbocharger technologies are helping to enhance the latest generation of vehicle engines and enabling new levels of vehicle performance, fuel efficiency and emissions reductions.

The new Honeywell TwoStage Electric Compressor for fuel cells and the Honeywell Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT™) Turbo for ECO gasoline applications represent step-change innovation in the industry.

The TwoStage Electric Compressor is an electric motor-driven compressor with an oil-less foil air bearing helping to increase the fuel cell’s power output and still reduce its size, weight and cost. The compressor represents a fusion of aerospace and automotive competencies and is believed to be an automotive industry-first offered at a lower cost structure and quality level that matches the needs of the automotive industry.

The VNT Turbo for ECO Gasoline applications builds upon Honeywell’s industry leading turbo diesel technology and extends the superior performance characteristics of variable internal geometry to gasoline applications, which have traditionally used wastegate technology to optimize airflow at higher operating temperatures. The Honeywell VNT turbocharger for gas engines offers new levels of outstanding low-end torque and fuel economy from a gasoline engine. Turbocharging and engine downsizing are an industry-wide trend to create smaller, more fuel-efficient and lower-emitting powertrains that match or exceed the performance of the larger engines they replace.

Honeywell showcased these new technologies at the prestigious Vienna Motor Symposium in late April. The annual event brought together the automotive engineering community from across the world and is recognized as one of the foremost motor conferences of the year.

During the event, Honeywell provided a glimpse into the future, unveiling its vision for how software used in the aviation industry can be applied to automotive. Existing technologies utilizing data and sensor inputs can help drivers better navigate in their surroundings, including innovative technology that can create a windshield display to show road position, highway speed limits, weather conditions, road paths and edges, other vehicles and possible hazards and GPS-linked daylight pictures of the route ahead.
