OREANDA-NEWS. April 28, 2007. Attending the seminar were representatives of the European Commission, Rosenergoatom, Kurchatov Institute, OKBM, Hydropress, Atomenergoproject, Research Institute of Atomic Reactors, Institute for Physics and Power Engineering, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, reported the press-centre of Rosenergoatom.
While opening the seminar, the head of the Department of Nuclear Science, Engineering and Information of Rosatom Valery Rachkov said: “Today Russia is actively developing nuclear energy. We have a large-scare program of NPP construction. In this light, we need active cooperation with our foreign partners and we hope that it will be fruitful and effective.”
He reminded the audience that the program stipulates the construction of two nuclear power units a year starting from 2007, three units — from 2009, four units — from 2014–2015.
Marc Deffrin from the Directorate General of the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) told the audience about the key research projects under Euratom’s 7th Framework Program, while Simon Webster from Euratom’s Directorate General for Research reported about safety projects.
The deputy director general of Rosenergoatom Oleg Sarayev reported on the necessity of new technological platform for nuclear energy development.
He said that Rosatom has already outlined the key directions of the platform and has already decided how much will be spent on those projects. One of the key projects is the construction of the 4th unit of Beloyarsk NPP with fast breeder BN-800 reactor. This project is to be completed in 2012.
In the future Rosatom is planning to design and build BN reactors of higher capacity working on combined uranium-plutonium fuel.
Sarayev said that BN allows the Russian nuclear power industry to transit to the closed fuel cycle. Rosatom is also planning to develop new types of reactors: lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor, lead cooled fast reactor, high-temperature gas cooled reactor and – gas turbine modular helium reactor.
The sides heard reports about the safety and modernization of Russian NPPs.
Rosatom and Euratom agreed to set up a working group for considering subjects and terms of cooperation in the coming two years and more.
