OREANDA-NEWS. June 17, 2008. In 2007, the ports of the Leningrad region handled 99 million tonnes, while this year they are to handle 110-115 million tonnes, Grigory Dvas, Vice-Governor of the Leningrad region said at international conference “Safety of Ports and Multimodal Transport Complexes”. According to Grigory Dvas, the port of Ust-Luga is to demonstrate the fastest growth in the region. In 2007 it handled 16 million tonnes. Within the nearest two years the port’s throughput is to raise to 55-60 million tonnes, by 2015 to 120 million tonnes. Besides, there is a plan to build the second branch of Baltic Pipeline System to Ust-Luga. Grigory Dvas also told Oktyabrskaya Railway (branch of Russian Railways) plans to transfer its junction station from Volkhovstoi to Mga thus enabling Ust-Luga to raise its throughput to 120 million tonnes. Mga-Gatchina-Veimarn section is under large-scale reconstruction already.

Moreover, it is planned to build a railway around Vyborg so that cargo could be delivered to the port of Primorsk by railway apart from pipeline. The Sever project aimed at annual transshipment of 24 million tonnes of oil products is under development in Primorsk.
