OREANDA-NEWS. On August 25, 2008 the third meeting of the foreign ministers of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) countries with participation of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev took place in Almaty, reported the Official website www.akorda.kz.

The Head of the state addressed to the participants of the forum, having congratulated the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the United Arab Emirates on joining the CICA. The President emphasized that Kazakhstan's initiative on convening CICA voiced in 1992 at the 47th session of the UN General Assembly has translated into a real factor of international relations and serves an effective instrument for maintenance of safety and cooperation in Asia.

In the meeting’s address Nursultan Nazarbayev set forth results of the basic stages of the CICA activities, discussed the issues facing the CICA member states, and also designated new directions of the CICA activities on integration of the countries of the region. “Famine, poverty, epidemics, environmental degradation, terrorism, drug trafficking – none of these global problems can be resolved without joint efforts of international community”, Nursulatan Nazarbayev stated.

According to the President’s words, “we are sure of the efficiency of such multilateral mechanisms as CICA in ensuring safety and stability. Kazakhstan will always be together with those states which intend to facilitate the solution of complicated issues and problems of the entire region”. Nursultan Nazarbayev suggested that Turkish Republic be elected to the post of the next Chairman of the CICA.

In his address Nursultan Nazarbayev concerned the situation which has developed in South Ossetia and Caucasus as a whole. According to the words of the Head of the State Now, “one of priorities is urgent delivery of humanitarian aid”. The President emphasized that Kazakhstan supports the solution to this issue offered by the administration of Russia based on the UN Charter, norms and principles of international law. Nursultan Nazarbayev expressed support for increasing the number of international observers in the conflict area and enhancing their role and readiness to join in OSCE's efforts aimed at normalization of the situation.

The President Nursultan Nazarbayev also expressed his condolences to the families of victims following the plane crash in Kyrgyzstan.

The issues concerning cooperation between member states, regulation of international conflicts, resolve global affairs facing the world community as well as search of the further effective ways of interaction of the CICA member states were discussed during the forum. The special attention of the meeting has been given to the issues on practical realization of the “Cooperative Approaches towards Implementing the CICA Confidence-Building Measures’ which was accepted in 2007 where the mechanisms of realization of the Catalogue of Confidence Building Measures are determined. The work of the forum is being continued.
