OREANDA-NEWS  On 10 June was announced, that at the 65th annual General Assembly of International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the CEO of JSC Aeroflot Russian Airlines Vitaly Savelyev elected member of IATA’s Board of Governors for the period of 2009–2012. This is also the first time that the head of the Russian company has entered one of the most important committees – the Nominations Committee, whose responsibility is to nominate candidate members of the Board to be approved by the Assembly.

The IATA Board of Governors is a regular political body of the Association, responsible to the General Assembly. The 30 Board members are elected from the directors of the world’s 230 biggest carriers included in IATA, and are approved by the Assembly. The Board provides IATA’s political leadership, acts in behalf of and in the interest of the Association, closely cooperates with the Director General and performs control over the regular committees and supplementary bodies of the Association.  The Board’s members give recommendations on particular issues of the Association’s activity.

Vitaly Savelyev has confirmed Aeroflot’s commitment, as a leading member, to active engagement in IATA’s efforts to improve the flight safety system, introduce modern technologies, and provide a better personnel training. The personal participation of Aeroflot CEO in governing body and key committee of IATA, the most respected international association of civil aviation, will allow Mr. Savelyev to directly shape the Association’s position on the global issues of the industry.

IATA was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Montreal. A union of the world’s leading carriers, IАТА coordinates and represents air transport industry interests in areas such as flight safety provision, flight performance, fare policies, maintenance, and aviation security, develops and publishes international standards, provides training and consultancy, etc. Aeroflot has been its full member since 1989, and is represented in the Board of Directors.
