OREANDA-NEWS. August 27, 2009. An information center for nuclear energy will be opened in Murmansk by the end of this year in the framework of the target program of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation. Secretary of the Public Council for Safe Use of Nuclear Energy in Murmansk Region Sergey Zhavoronkin has told MBNEWS about this project.

— What is the objective of this project?

— The Center will familiarize its visitors with the basic principles of physics, natural science, power engineering and nuclear energy and will elucidate them on the problems and development prospects of the nuclear industry. It will be open to different age and social groups. The Center may serve as a venue for meetings, workshops, training courses. The goal of this project is not just propaganda but education and enlightenment.

— Where will the Center be located and when exactly will it be opened?

— We have not yet decided where the Center will be located but the fleet and the education department are already tearing it apart — each proposing its own locations. This project has interested many people. We keep receiving proposals. A delegation of Atomexpo, a company organizing Rosatom’s exhibitions, will visit us in late Sept to determine the location of the Center. The opening procedures will take some three months. Rosatom is planning to open 11 such centers in Russia. It has already opened ones in Voronezh and Tomsk.

— What equipment will the Center have?

— There are specific area and height requirements. The Center must be large enough to have room for a big screen for film shows. The tables will have control panels as many events will be held in the form of a quiz. The Center will be maintained by three persons: system administrator, director and technical specialist. The estimated cost of the whole project is 10mln RUR.
