OREANDA-NEWS. August 3, 2011. The Carbon Diet contest launched in late April by SCM came to an end. Yuliya Rymaruk, the journalist of Segodnya daily edition in Donetsk, excelled in drawing the readers' attention to climate change and proved that everybody can contribute to tackling this global problem.

The Carbon Diet started on 26 April. Journalists had to take a test on a Carbon Footprint Calculator, record their results and realize any action during a week to reduce personal CO2 emissions. Later they had to write a story about the outcomes and the emotions and publish them in print edition or a personal blog. The deadline passed on 20 June.

Sixteen journalists of national and regional media took part in the contest. The jury chaired by SCM Director of Public Relations and Communications Natalia Yemchenko called Yuliya Rymaruk, journalist of Segodnya daily edition in Donetsk, winner of the contest. Her article is published on SCM corporate website.

"For us it was important to show that minimizing negative impact on environment is not for business only. An average family produces about 18.67 tonnes of CO2 annually. However, following simple rules, everybody can reduce their carbon footprint. Yulia Rymaruk outran many others in describing how and why this could be done," noted Natalia Yemchenko.

As promised, Yuliya will get her energy-saving prize: a solar-powered laptop case with a universal adaptor to charge electronic devices (phones, laptops, cameras, etc.). Having reduced her CO2 emissions footprint by over four times, Yulia will be able to decrease them even more.
