November 21, 2012.  According to the regular research of telecommunication services for individuals conducted by GfK Ukraine, at least 10% of Ukrainians aged over 16 years old use mobile Internet, with 80% of them doing it on the mobile phone screen. The results of the special survey of mobile Internet usage show that 48% of mobile Internet users do that every day or almost every day. More than a half of respondents spend 1-4 hours online daily using mobile phone screen. Most respondents use Internet via mobile phone to check email, search for information and for social media.

According to the regular market research of telecommunication services for individuals conducted by GfK Ukraine, at least 10% of Ukrainians aged over 16 years old use mobile Internet, with 80% of them doing it on the mobile phone screen. In order to define Ukrainians’ habits in using Internet via mobile phones and to learn whether a small screen of a mobile phone can replace a big PC monitor, GfK Ukraine conducted a special online survey.

Results of a special survey conducted by GfK Ukraine show that 48% of respondents* use Internet on a mobile phone screen almost every day. However, 85% of respondents spend their time online using PC or laptop.

As for the number of hours spend online, more than a half of respondents (53%) spend from 1 to 4 hours online via mobile phone screen. For comparison – 51% of respondents spend over 5 hours online using a big screen. "After the analysis of the survey data, we can conclude that Internet on a mobile screen is rather additional way to access Internet than its substitute”, as Solomiya Hlibovytska, Senior Researcher of GfK Ukraine Telecommunication Market Surveys Department, comments.

The most popular places of using Internet on mobile phone screen include usage in public places (84%), at home (72%), at work (70%) and in public transport (70%). Thus respondents often go online in public places and at work using GPRS/EDGE/3G technology (39% and 45% respectively). WiFi preferred is for using Internet at home (42%).

In order to access Internet on mobile phone screen respondents use as ordinary mobile phones (37% of total number of all phones) as smart-phones (63%). Terminals with Android operational system prevail among the latter.

Most respondents use Internet on mobile phone to check email (86%), searching for information (81%), for social networking sites (74%) and searching for information about the weather (65%). 15% of respondents use mobile phone to make shopping online.

The survey was conducted in October 2012 with online panel of GfK Ukraine. 612 interviews with Internet users aged 16-45 years who use Internet on their mobile phone screen at least once a week were conducted. The sample is quoted by sex, age, region, and settlement size.
