OREANDA-NEWS. In order to continue the supply of hygienically neat and clean, Bed Rolls (Linen) to air conditioned class passengers, Indian Railways is planning to further set-up more state-of-art mechanized laundries on 42 new locations in near future in addition to 21 existing locations. Out of 42 new locations, eight laundries are planned to be set-up in the current year. These eight locations are Bikaner, Hatia, Chakradharpur, Hubli, Mysorre, Surat, Mumbai and Dibrugarh.

A total number of 21 mechanized laundries have already been set up on Railways’ land at Mumbai, Howrah, Sealdah, Kamakhya (2 nos.), Lucknow, Varanasi, Jammu Tawi, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Tatanagar, Indore, Junagarh, Durg, Bilaspur, Samstipur, Danapur & Jabalpur including 3 state of the art laundries on Built Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) model through private investment at Chennai, Ahmadabad and Wadi Bunder (Mumbai)

There is perceptible improvement in the quality of washed linen wherever Bed Rolls are being supplied duly washed in these mechanized laundries. 100% supervision and monitoring of quality of washed lines is being done at calendaring machine used for ironing of bed sheets. Nearly 30 % of linens supplied on Indian Railways have been brought under these existing laundries. Once the additional 42 laundries are set-up in near future, about 90%of linens will be covered under this scheme.

In view of complaints about poor quality of washed linen, Indian Railways had revamped its strategy and started setting up its own state of art mechanized laundries at various locations across India with a missionary zeal. With the introduction of such mechanized laundries there has been significant reduction in the number of passenger complaints on linen.

Indian Railways is one of the largest users of Linen in the form of Bed Rolls being supplied to Air conditioned class passengers. A massive 90 million sets approximately of Bed Rolls are being handled by Indian Railways per annum.
