OREANDA-NEWS  Egypt expects to introduce cards of the Russian payment system Mir by the end of 2024. TASS writes about this with reference to sources in the banking community of the republic.

According to the manager of the branch of a large Egyptian financial institution, preparations for the launch of the cards are already at the stage of practical implementation. The source stressed that the "political component" of using Russian cards in the country has already been agreed.

At the same time, some technical issues remain unresolved, in particular, the connection of the Russian payment system with the local Mezza banking network, which will take some time. The agency's interlocutor said that the Central Bank of Egypt is already working on this issue.

Another banker said that Egypt's accession to the BRICS contributed to the acceleration of the implementation of the Mir cards. He expects Egyptian banks to be able to accept Russian cards "in about six months."

Earlier, the trade attache of the Iranian Embassy in Russia, Rahimi Mohsen, said that the country is preparing to launch a pilot project for accepting Mir cards. According to him, the first agreements on maps appeared back in 2022. Now specialists are working on technical nuances that will make the payment process using Russian cards uninterrupted.
