Indonesia is part of the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire". A band of volcanoes and tectonic faults 40 thousand kilometers long encircles the Pacific Ocean, running along the coast of South and North America to the southern part of Alaska, then turns to Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia and ends near the island of New Guinea, New Zealand and the southwestern part of Oceania. It is in the "Ring of Fire" that almost 90 percent of the approximately 1.5 thousand known volcanoes of the planet are located.
