OREANDA-NEWS  Finland has begun to modernize the railway for the accelerated transfer of troops to Russia, writes Reuters.

"Due to the conflict in Ukraine and the accession to NATO, Finland has begun to update the railway connecting it with Sweden," the publication says. The article notes that after Helsinki joined the alliance, NATO considers northwestern Europe as a single military bloc. The renovation of the Laurila—Tornio—Haparanda railway should be completed next year, which will allow the allies to transfer NATO equipment faster in the event of a conflict with Russia.

According to retired US Major General Gordon Davis Jr., in the event of a possible conflict with Russia, Finland and NATO should ensure control over the Barents Sea and protect ships delivering reinforcements for the alliance.
