OREANDA-NEWS The main goal of the UN is the release of the president of Niger, Mohammed Razum, who was deposed by the rebels and the return of the presidency to him, the representative of the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, said on Thursday.

"We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Mohammed Razum and his reinstatement as head of State. Our goal is to prevent harm to the President-elect's Mind," Kak said at a briefing, responding to a request to comment on Thursday's emergency summit of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS).

"We are cooperating with ECOWAS to consider the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the situation in Niger," he added. Following the meeting of the leaders of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS), Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said that ECOWAS is ready to consider any options for solving the crisis in Niger, including, as a last resort, the idea of using force.

According to Western media, the participants of the meeting in Abuja agreed to form and keep a military contingent ready in case it is necessary to conduct an operation on the territory of Niger.

"We emphasize that we are constantly aimed at restoring constitutional order using peaceful methods," the media quoted excerpts from the final statement of ECOWAS.

On July 26, it became known that some of the employees of the Presidential Guard of Niger opposed President Bazuma, who was captured and removed from power. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Niger stated that the military command supported the fighters of the Presidential Guard who opposed Bazum. Army General Abdurakhman Tchiani was announced as the new leader of the country.

The United States, France, the EU, the African Union, and ECOWAS condemned the military coup. However, it was supported by Mali and Burkina Faso.

The coup in Niger was the seventh military coup in West and Central Africa in less than three years.
