OREANDA-NEWS. Today a shipment from Western Europe of euro banknotes for the Bank of Lithuania reached Vilnius International Airport. From there, the euro banknotes, with a police escort, were safely delivered to the Bank of Lithuania’s vaults.

‘This is the second euro banknote shipment that was delivered to Vilnius in accordance with the plan approved by the European Central Bank (ECB). It will yet again supplement the stock of euro banknotes, necessary to ensure smooth circulation of euro banknotes in Lithuania. The Bank of Lithuania issues into circulation euro banknotes and coins; it also withdraws from circulation damaged and worn banknotes,’ said Deivis Stankevi?ius, Director of the Cash Service at the Bank of Lithuania.

Euro banknotes are printed at approximately 16 heavily secured European printing houses. From there, in coordination with the ECB, the banknotes are distributed to the euro area national central banks.

In transporting banknotes, it is necessary to follow strict safety procedures and requirements, including flying the banknotes during daylight hours, limiting traffic while transporting them to the vaults and other security measures. All this is done with the help of the police. Due to security reasons, the cash delivery time, route, security and other details cannot be disclosed to the public ahead of time.
