OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union (EU) will allocate 700 thousand euros for emergency assistance to refugees at the Polish-Belarusian border. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the statement of the European Commission.

European Commissioner Janez Lenarcic called for constant access to representatives of international organizations from both sides for effective assistance to migrants. “The EU supports its humanitarian partners to alleviate the suffering of the people,” he stressed.

It is noted that the funds will be transferred through the International Committee of the Red Cross. They are used to buy food, medicine and basic necessities for refugees.

Earlier it became known that the German government refused to recognize the legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko as the President of Belarus, but considers it necessary to negotiate with him to provide assistance to migrants. According to the representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers Steffen Seibert, contacts with the Belarusian leader will help to contribute to the settlement of the situation with migrants.

Since the beginning of November, the migration crisis has worsened on the Polish-Belarusian border. Thousands of refugees gathered at the border and made several attempts to get to Poland. On November 16, illegal immigrants tried to break the barriers and started throwing stones, sticks and other objects at the Polish military. In response, Poland fired tear gas, water cannons and stun grenades.
