OREANDA-NEWS. June 20, 2016. The mountain communities of Colorado are known for their vast landscapes, great skiing and endless miles of trails. But on June 14, the focus went from the outdoors to the indoors as more than 90 children gathered at the Silverthorne Recreational Center in Silverthorne, Colo. to learn about fitness and nutrition from NBA Legend, Ervin Johnson.

The NBA FIT Clinic, sponsored by the National Basketball Association and Kaiser Permanente and hosted by former Denver Nuggets star Johnson, was designed to help local children sharpen their basketball skills while learning important lessons about nutrition, exercise and playing together. Kaiser Permanente also provided a health station where kids in attendance learned about nutrition, participated in trivia in the form of exercises and won prizes.

“Silverthorne is a highly active community — one that embraces the outdoors wholeheartedly. Even so, we must continue to be intentional about including our kids in this kind of healthy lifestyle,” said Brent Bowman, executive director of Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s mountain service area. “We’re honored to partner with the NBA on this wonderful event that shows our children how exercise can be fun and encourages them to put the screen down — even if it is just for an hour each day.”

As the NBA’s first-ever health care partner, Kaiser Permanente serves as the health care expert and strategic consultant for the league on health and wellness programming, including the NBA FIT program. Through this partnership, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA have jointly held various FIT Clinics in communities across the country.
