OREANDA-NEWS. June 21, 2007. Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Control (Rostekhnadzor) has invited International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor its activities, reported the press-centre of Rostekhnadzor.

The head of Rostekhnadzor Konstantin Pulikovsky says that in 2009 a special IAEA mission will check up the work of Rostekhnadzor as an agency controlling the organizations responsible for nuclear and radiation safety.

“We have invited IAEA experts so they assess our ability to ensure nuclear and radiation safety, which is very important now that we are making ambitious plans for nuclear energy development. I don’t mean nuclear danger. Our NPPs cannot be dangerous. What we have to decide under Rosatom and Rosenergoatom programs is how to treat spent nuclear fuel. Nuclear energy is safe in terms of ecology and efficient in terms of electricity production. As regards life prolongation, here we mean full replacement and modernization,” says Pulikovsky.
