OREANDA-NEWS. On July 13, 2007 on FSUE “PO “Sevmash” manufacturing of the first container UKKh -109 for storing spent nuclear fuel has been started. Structures workpieces are being processed in mechanical workshop, reported the press-centre of “Sevmash”.

Contract for manufacturing specialized packing sets for Leningrad nuclear power plant was signed in March 2007. In March 2008 head sample shall be produced, and up to the end of 2008 it is planned to produce 21 containers.

Enterprise has experience in manufacturing such products. From 2002 to 2006 60 containers TUK-108/1 were produced for waste nuclear fuel of submarines. At present time 50 containers TUK-120 are being produced for nuclear ice breakers. 14 containers have been already delivered in Murmansk.

Containers UKKh-109 are larger in mass and dimensions than those, manufactured at Sevmash earlier. Specialized areas in shops are being prepared, equipment is being selected and technologies and outfitting are being developed to arrange manufacturing.

Storage packing set (UKKh-109) is designed in OJSC “Design Bureau of special mechanical engineering“. Housing of metal-concrete container is made from concentric steel plating, space between which is filled with super strong concrete. Inside of housing there is a casing in which cells waste nuclear fuel ampoules are placed.
