Kazakhstan businessmen can take an active part in privatization campaign in neighboring Uzbekistan to purchase Uzbek enterprises – but only provided that they have concrete investment plans. This was announced by Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov on the first day of his official visit to Uzbekistan.

According to him, in the course of the talks with the Uzbek leaders the sides detailedly discussed the Uzbek initiative to have national enterprises privatized. The Kazakh side had carefully studied the recent decree of the President I. Karimov of Uzbekistan on further measures to expand privatization and attract foreign investments.

”The new revolutionary approach to privatization – sales of enterprises at zero cost but with concrete obligations to invest – has been detailedly discussed in Kazakhstan. I have coordinated this issue with Uzbek President and I am making an official announcement that Uzbekistan welcomes Kazakh investors, but privatization shouldn’t be the goal in itself. An essential condition is availability of a clear investment plan with markets for the final products being clearly specified”, Kazakh Prime Minister said.
