OREANDA-NEWS. August 17, 2007. Although Unit 2 of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) will be taken offline for scheduled maintenance for nearly a month and a half, Lietuvos Energija AB will ensure the supply of electricity across the country, using possibilities of other Lithuanian power plants and imports from neighboring countries. The unit was stopped on August 18, reported the press-centre of Lietuvos Energija AB.

”During the overhaul on Unit 2, the main electricity generator will be the power plant Lietuvos Elektrine, which will operate at a higher-than-usual capacity, the rest of the capacity being used to maintain the reserve capacity lest there should be an outage in the transmission grid of Lithuanian or neighboring countries while importing electricity“, - says Mr.Edvardas Vazgela, Market Department Director, Lietuvos Energija AB.

The anticipated domestic demand during the overhaul of INPP is around 900 million kWh. About 37 per cent of electricity, necessary to cover the demands of Lithuanian consumers will be generated in domestic power plants, 63 per cent – imported from Russia, Estonia and Scandinavia.

According to E. Vazgela, the diversity of electricity generation sources will not only ensure a reliable power supply across the country but will also foster competition among Russian, Scandinavian and Baltic generators, supplying power to Lithuanian consumers at optimal conditions, without increasing electricity prices.

While scheduling the operation of the power system at a mode with the largest domestic power producer being offline, as usually, diagrams of transmission grid were checked, adjustments to repair works on infrastructure of power grid in Lithuania and neighboring countries made, operation of power systems – revised and approved.
