OREANDA-NEWS. On August 28, 2007 the secretary of the Public Council of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy (Rosatom) Igor Konyshev has told journalists that substantial funds have been budgeted for the program to overcome the consequences of the activities of “Mayak” Production Association in 1940s-1950s, reported the press-centre of Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy.

Particularly, this year the Government has allocated 61.5mln RUR for the 3rd stage of the conservation of reservoir N9 (Lake Karachay), 425mln RUR (against 128mln RUR in 2006) for the construction of a combined sewerage system, 56mln RUR for the reconstruction of the top of the dam 11 (against 128mln RUR in 2006). Rosatom has allocated 106mln RUR for the last project.

The Government is also financing the modernization of LF-2 and Ruslan reactor systems, the reconstruction of the physical protection system of Plant N20, the conservation of reservoir N17 (Staroye Boloto) and other projects. A total of 1,5bln RUR has been budgeted for the program in 2007.

Konyshev said that Rosatom continues resettling the residents of Muslumovo, a village on Techa River that suffered the most from Mayak’s radioactive waste in 1949–1953. Today, the residents of Muslumovo may have received more radiation than allowed.

Konyshev noted that the population of Muslumovo is not being evacuated or resettled by force. In the last 20 years the central and local authorities have repeatedly tried to help the people to resettle. In 2006 Rosatom and the administration of Chelyabinsk region allocated 600mln RUR and 450mln RUR, respectively, for starting the resettlement. According to this project, the Government is going to buy 741 households for 1,000,000 RUR each. The householders can spend the money to buy houses in any place they like. 566 families have already decided where they will leave, 252 of them have already made contracts.
