OREANDA-NEWS. On August 29, 2007 Belarus is in negotiations with Russia about the amount of sugar the former plans to export to the latter in 2008. Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky told media, Belarus expects all the Belarusian sugar made of sugar beet to be allowed for export to Russia, reported the Official website http://www.government.by

In his words, Belarusian sugar is a high-quality product largely popular with foreign customers, including those in Russia.

Sergei Sidorsky noted, Belarus had to voluntarily reduce beet sugar exports to Russia. In line with the deal next year Belarus is to ship at most 100,000 tonnes of sugar to Russia. However, the Belarusian side is in vigorous negotiations with the Agriculture Ministry of Russia with a view to increasing the exports.

Efforts are being exercised to boost sugar shipments to other countries as well. Sergei Sidorsky expressed confidence, after Belarusian sugar mills are modernised, the price for Belarusian sugar will be competitive on the international market provided new technologies are used.
