OREANDA-NEWS. The first fiber-glass optical transmission cable is put into commission on Sakhalin, Russian Railways' press-service announced. This project has been carried out by the Russian Railways subsidiary TransTeleCom at a cost of around USD16 million.

Over the next five years, TransTeleCom expects revenues from the line at the rate of about USD22-44 million, thereby securing a return of between 27-38% of the investment. The new communications link will give a significant boost to the economy of the Sakhalin region and play a major role in implementing the new rail connection between Russia and Sakhalin Island, now being built as part of the Strategy for the Development of Rail Transport in Russia until 2030.
