OREANDA-NEWS. October 18, 2007. The requirements say that, when designing fuel elements and fuel assemblies, one should consider the parameters of the reactor system they are meant for, their compatibility with other systems of nuclear power plants and should keep in mind the requirements of the federal laws and rules in the field of use of nuclear energy. Fuel elements and fuel assemblies should be designed in compliance with safety standards.

Fuel elements and fuel assemblies should be designed in such a way as to resist thermal, mechanical and radiation effects. They should not deform and cause problems with energy conduction and discharge.

This is the first time Rostekhnadzor has published such requirements. They are part of the federal standards and rules in the field of use of nuclear energy.

The requirements have been drafted by the Scientific-Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Rostekhnadzor on the basis of the state standards and rules in the fuel of use of nuclear energy and recommendations of international organizations.

The document takes force on Jan 1 2008.
