OREANDA-NEWS. October 19, 2007. Russia and Japan are to meet in Tokyo in Oct to negotiate draft inter-governmental agreement for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov  said in an interview to Jiji Press news agency (Japan).

“The talks are underway. We have already exchanged drafts of the future document  and, if we show good will and aspiration to enlarge our cooperation, we will certainly come to agreement,” Lavrov said.

“The business circles of Russia and Japan are really interested in intensifying their cooperation in the turnover of nuclear materials for nuclear power engineering,” Lavrov said.

During the last official visit of Lavrov to Japan in Feb 2007 Russia and Japan agreed to start drafting a new inter-governmental agreement in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. The parties have already met twice – in Apr and June.
