OREANDA-NEWS. November 2, 2007. Wen Jiabao: Russian and Chinese companies are discussing possibilities to enlarge their cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy

The construction of the first two units of Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in China was one of the biggest trade-economic cooperation projects between China and Russia. Due to joint efforts, the units were successfully launched in May and Aug 2007, respectively, and are normally operating now, Prime Minister of China Wen Jiabao says in an interview to Interfax.

“Now, our companies are discussing ways to enlarge their cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy,” says Jiabao.

He points out that China and Russia have shown impressive progress in their cooperation in the sphere and this strongly contributes to the development of their strategic partnership.

The Chinese and Russian authorities are presently drafting a protocol on mid-term cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy between China and Russia. The protocol will set guidelines for Chinese-Russian cooperation in the coming decades.

Jiababo supports the project to establish an international uranium enrichment center in Russia. He says that this will help to strengthen the global non-proliferation regime. China is ready to discuss this problem with all concerned states.
