OREANDA-NEWS. On November 07, 2007 Conference “Role of Public Associations of Scientists in Resolving Ecological Problems of Nuclear Power Industry in Regions” has been conducted at Leningrad NPP, reported the press-centre of Leningrad NPP.

The conference was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Sosnovy Bor branch of the International Academy of Ecology, Man and Nature Protection Sciences (MANEB).

The conference was aimed at elaborating modern approaches to the development of safe techno-sphere and nuclear power industry as its important part.

Director of Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant Valery Lebedev made a report on the plant’s work to enhance its ecological and technical safety. He pointed out that the ecological policy of Rosenergoatom Concern is aimed at ensuring safe operation of its nuclear power plants and preventing accidents. The key principle of Rosenergoatom’s ecological policy is deeply echeloned protection against radiation, minimization of NPPs’ impact on the environment as well as openness and transparency of ecological information.

“The analysis of the radiation situation at Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant and in its nearby area proves that the plant’s safety system is efficient and that it has no negative impact on the environment, personnel and population,” Lebedev said.

The conferees also heard reports by the director of Research Institute of Sosnovy Bor V.Vasilenko, the director of Sosnovy Bor branch of MANEB V.Kondratyev and some other ecological experts.

President of MANEB V.Rogalyov pointed out the active work of his academy and presented the most outstanding scientists with medals and certificates.

The conferees pointed out the constructive experience of Leningrad NPP in fundamental and applied research in the field of safe nuclear power engineering and outlined MANEB’s plans for supporting the development of Leningrad NPP and the nuclear power industry, in general.
